SHRC directs police to clarify position over the detention of foreign journalist | KNO

a day after the arrest of a foreign journalist here in Kashmir capital Srinagar, State Human Rights Commission has issued notices to top police brass directing them to clear their position on the issue. Pertinently, former awarding winning TV Channel TF 1 French journalist, Paul Comiti was arrested from Pratap Park Srinagar on Saturday while he was preparing a documentary on the pellet victims. Police have registered FIR vide number 87/2017 under section 14 (B) Passport Act and Comiti is presently lodged in Police Station Kothibagh. Human Rights activist Muhammd Ahsan Untoo filed a petition (vide number 395) before State Human Rights Commission on Monday in this regard. The petitioner has asked the government to clarify whether any foreign journalist has any right to hightlight the human rights issues in Kashmir Valley or not. The petitioner has described the detention of French journalist illegal and has requested the Commission to direct the government to produce the arrested journalist before SHRC. Acting upon the petition, Chairman SHRC Retired Justice Bilal Ahmed Nazki issued notices to Inspector General of Police, SSP Srinagar and SP East directing them to clarify their stand on the issue. The case has been listing for hearing on December 18 this month.
